PhD Position at LISAQUA within the SwitchFloc Grant Agreement –
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)
The SwitchFloc Grant Agreement is a project funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme, aimed at training the next generation of professionals in innovative and sustainable aquaculture systems based on Biofloc Technology (BFT). The project provides a highly international, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral research environment, fostering close collaboration between academic institutions and industry partners.
We are currently inviting applications for a PhD position entitled:
“Determining the Impact of Biofloc on Penaeus vannamei Production under Farm Conditions”
This PhD project aims to evaluate the impact of biofloc on Penaeus vannamei production under commercial breeding conditions, building on the key role of biofloc systems composed of nitrifying bacteria, heterotrophic microorganisms, and, in some cases, microalgae, which collectively ensure efficient nutrient filtration and recycling.
Despite its benefits, biofloc represents a highly complex and dynamic environment, characterized by continuously evolving chemical, biological, and mechanical parameters, making its management at a commercial scale particularly challenging. The main objective of this project is therefore to establish robust and reliable management protocols to ensure stable biofloc quality and optimal shrimp performance.
This will involve identifying key biotic and abiotic parameters, characterizing the microbial communities associated with optimal performance, optimizing these populations to enhance filtration capacity and improve zootechnical results, and ultimately quantifying the real contribution of biofloc to shrimp growth.
