PhD Position at the Università degli Studi di Palermo within the SwitchFloc Grant Agreement – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)
The SwitchFloc Grant Agreement is a project funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme, aimed at training the next generation of professionals in innovative and sustainable aquaculture systems based on Biofloc Technology (BFT). The project provides a highly international, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral research environment, promoting collaboration between academic institutions and industry partners.
We are currently inviting applications for a PhD position entitled:
“Reduction of BFT Carbon Footprint through Water Reuse and Biofloc Recycling: Assessing Carbon Footprint under Carrying BFT Conditions”
The main objective of this PhD position is to develop a mechanistic Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB)-based Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach to estimate the carbon footprint of BFT systems under varying operational conditions, and to link impact-related costs at the ecosystem level.
In addition, the project aims to enhance water reuse and biofloc recycling as strategies to reduce the overall carbon footprint of Biofloc Technology (BFT) systems. To quantify the carbon footprint associated with biofloc systems, a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) analysis will be conducted. The DEB framework enables the simulation of energy and matter allocation to target species and their surrounding habitat.
Within this context, carbon-oriented DEB models for the main farmed species will be parameterised and calibrated, providing a robust tool for assessing environmental impacts and supporting the development of more sustainable aquaculture practices.
If you are motivated to join an innovative research team and develop your PhD within an international excellence framework, we encourage you to apply by submitting the required documentation to gianluca.sara@unipa.it.
